Research approach

From question to evidence to action

A disciplined framework for turning complex organizational questions into clear research conclusions and evidence-based recommendations.

Ellis & Associates operates from a scholar-practitioner foundation, combining the rigor of advanced academic inquiry with the practical orientation of organizational and strategic work. The methodological approach is not fixed to a single tradition; it is determined by the nature of the question, the available evidence, and the standards appropriate to the engagement. Quantitative inquiry, qualitative investigation, integrated mixed-methods designs, and structured diagnostic assessment are each employed where the work demands them.

Define

Clarify the organizational question, research objective, decision context, and the practical use of the findings. Methodological direction begins here, as the nature of the question shapes whether the engagement calls for statistical analysis, interpretive inquiry, diagnostic assessment, or a combination of approaches.

Design

Develop an appropriate research and analytical framework, including methods, evidence sources, evaluation criteria, and scope. Designs may be quantitative, drawing on statistical modeling, multivariate analysis, and structured measurement; qualitative, employing systematic interpretive methods to examine meaning, experience, and organizational context; mixed-methods, integrating both traditions; or diagnostic, applying a structured multi-source evidence model to examine organizational conditions across defined performance domains.

Investigate

Collect and examine relevant evidence using the methods appropriate to the design. Quantitative work involves structured data collection, variable specification, and rigorous statistical procedures. Qualitative inquiry draws on interviews, document analysis, observational data, and systematic coding. Diagnostic engagements may incorporate executive interviews, workforce surveys, organizational records, performance data, governance documents, and other institutional evidence examined across multiple independent sources.

Analyze

Identify patterns, relationships, findings, and organizational implications with attention to context, limitations, and the strength of available evidence. Statistical analysis is applied where numerical data warrant it; interpretive analysis is applied where meaning, narrative, and organizational experience are the relevant evidence. Diagnostic analysis examines evidence within and across performance domains to identify recurring conditions, organizational strengths, performance barriers, and areas requiring leadership attention.

Inform

Translate findings into clear research conclusions and actionable recommendations that leaders may consider within their own decision-making processes. Diagnostic engagements may also include priority classification, an Organizational Performance Index, a Strategic Action Framework, and an executive briefing. Ellis & Associates does not assume management authority or guarantee organizational outcomes.
